“And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word. But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, ‘Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.’” – Luke 10:39-40
Mary sat at Jesus’ feet, listening, learning, and receiving. Martha, meanwhile, was pulled in every direction—busy, pressured, distracted. Recently this question was posed to me: “What is your life producing? Not how much you’re doing, but the quality of what you’re doing.” That question exposes how easily we confuse activity with fruitfulness. Martha was doing a lot, but she wasn’t producing what mattered most. Mary chose the one thing that would shape everything else—being with Jesus.
The world pushes us to stay busy, to hustle harder, to fill every moment with tasks and responsibilities. There’s nothing wrong with working diligently, but busyness becomes dangerous when it distracts us from Christ. Martha wasn’t doing something sinful—she was serving. But she was serving without first sitting. Mary understood that true service flows from time spent at Jesus’ feet. Before she poured out, she allowed Jesus to pour in. She knew she could not give what she had not received.
This is the heart of the story: effectiveness in serving Jesus begins with intimacy with Jesus. We cannot produce spiritual fruit if we haven’t been with the Vine. We cannot serve with the right motives if we haven’t heard His voice. We cannot walk in strength if we haven’t sat in His presence. Martha tried to serve Jesus without being still before Him. Mary chose to be still so she could serve well. One was distracted; the other was devoted.
What about your life today? What is it producing? Are you busy simply because life pushes you, or are you moving with purpose because Jesus leads you? Did you begin your day at His feet, or did you rush into activity without listening to His word? If distraction has taken over, the day isn’t lost. Slow down. Sit with Jesus. Let Him speak, let Him fill, let Him steady your heart. Only then will your life produce what truly matters.
