Religious Busyness or Genuine Surrender?

“They hear your words, but they do not do them.” – Ezekiel 33:31

Through Ezekiel, God exposed a heartbreaking reality among His people. They gathered to hear His message, listened attentively to His prophet, and even spoke as though they loved the Lord. Outwardly, everything appeared spiritual. They showed up, listened, and participated. Yet God saw beyond their words and religious activity. He saw hearts that were still devoted to their own desires. Their profession of faith sounded convincing, but their lives told a different story.

This same danger exists today. It is possible to be busy with church activities, serve in ministries, give financially, and speak often about God while remaining distant from Him in daily life. Activity is not the same as obedience. God is not impressed by motion alone; He examines motivation. The question is not merely whether we are doing something for God, but whether we are doing what God has actually called us to do. Many people substitute religious busyness for genuine surrender, yet the Lord always measures the heart behind the action.

Jesus addressed this very issue when He asked, “Why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say?” True discipleship is more than agreement with biblical truth; it is obedience to biblical truth. It requires laying down self, submitting to Christ, and allowing His Word to shape every area of life. When love for Jesus becomes the motive, obedience becomes more than duty—it becomes worship. And as we take steps of faith, God provides the strength to follow Him.

Take a moment to examine your life honestly. Is your walk with Christ confined to church services and spiritual conversations, or is it influencing how you live every day? Are your actions flowing from a heart surrendered to God, or from a desire to appear spiritual? Ask the Lord to align your heart with His will. Don’t settle for merely hearing His Word. Live it, obey it, and allow it to transform every part of your life.

“Thou hast struck a heavy blow at my pride, at the false god of self, and I lie in pieces before thee. But thou hast given me another Master and Lord, thy Son, Jesus, and now my heart is turned towards holiness, my life speeds as an arrow from a bow towards complete obedience to thee. Help me in all my doings to put down sin and to humble pride. Save me from the love of the world and the pride of life, from everything that is natural to fallen man, and let Christ’s nature be seen in me day by day.” – The Valley of Vision
