“The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved!” – Jeremiah 8:20
These are among the saddest words in all of Scripture. After forty years of preaching, warning, pleading, and calling people to repentance, Jeremiah looked at the spiritual condition of Judah and saw a nation unchanged. The seasons had come and gone. The opportunities to respond had been plentiful. God had been patient. Yet the people refused to listen. In an agricultural society, harvest was a time of rejoicing, abundance, and gathering. Spiritually, however, God found His people barren, unrepentant, and unprepared. The season of opportunity was slipping away, and Jeremiah’s heart broke for those who would face judgment without salvation.
Jeremiah is often called the “Weeping Prophet” because he loved the people enough to tell them the truth, even when they rejected it. He was mocked, beaten, imprisoned, and ignored, yet he remained faithful to the message God had given him. From a worldly perspective, his ministry seemed unsuccessful. There were no large crowds, no national revival, and very few visible results. But Jeremiah understood that success is measured by faithfulness, not popularity. He kept proclaiming God’s Word because he believed there was always hope while God’s invitation remained open. As long as there was breath, there was the possibility of repentance.
That same hope should live in the hearts of believers today. It is easy to look at someone’s life and conclude they will never come to Christ. It is easy to become discouraged when years of prayer seem unanswered. But the gospel teaches us that nothing is impossible for God. The hardest heart can be softened. The most unlikely person can be saved. Our responsibility is not to determine who will respond but to remain faithful in sharing the message. The harvest season may be nearing its end, but the invitation of Christ still stands. That is why we continue to pray, continue to witness, and continue to hope.
Is there someone in your life you’ve quietly given up on? Have you stopped praying because you can no longer imagine them turning to God? Don’t let discouragement replace faith. Keep sharing, keep praying, and keep trusting the Lord. The summer has not ended yet. While there is still time, proclaim Christ with confidence and compassion. The God who saved you is still able to save anyone.
“The time of God’s patience is the time of man’s repentance.”
