The Markers That Lead You Home

“Set up signposts, make landmarks; set your heart toward the highway, the way in which you went.” – Jeremiah 31:21

These words were spoken to a people who had wandered far from God and were suffering the consequences of their rebellion. Yet even as judgment loomed, God spoke hope. He promised that one day He would restore His people and bring them home again. Jeremiah pictures Israel as someone who has strayed from the right path and now must follow a trail of markers back to where she belongs. The road home was not lost. God had already marked the way. All they needed to do was turn around and follow it.

God has always left signposts for His people. Through His Word, His promises, His prophets, and ultimately through His Son, He has continually pointed the way back to Himself. Many of us grew up hearing the stories of Scripture—Abraham’s faith, Joseph’s perseverance, David’s worship, and the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. These truths are not merely stories; they are divine landmarks placed along life’s highway. They remind us of who God is and where true life is found. Even when people wander, God’s Word continues to stand as a faithful guide, calling them back to the path of truth.

The church at Ephesus provides a powerful example. In the book of Acts, it was a thriving, passionate church filled with love for Christ. Yet by the time we reach Revelation 2, something had changed. They were still busy, still serving, still orthodox in many ways, but they had left their first love. Jesus called them to remember, repent, and return. The answer was not something new; it was a return to what they once knew. The same invitation stands today. When life becomes crowded with distractions, responsibilities, and spiritual drift, God calls us back to the ancient path.

Take a moment to consider the signposts God has placed in your life. The Scriptures you’ve heard, the lessons you’ve learned, the convictions you’ve felt, and the moments when God clearly spoke to your heart are not accidents. They are landmarks pointing you home. If you have wandered, don’t keep moving farther away. Turn back. Open God’s Word. Set your heart toward Him again. The road home has already been marked, and your Heavenly Father is waiting for your return.

“…let us go back to our first simple faith, and recover our lost strength.” – C.H. Spurgeon
