Buried in Plain Sight

“Then Hilkiah the high priest said to Shaphan the scribe, ‘I have found the Book of the Law in the house of the Lord.'” — 2 Kings 22:8

By the time King Josiah came to the throne, Judah had endured decades of spiritual decline. Wicked kings had filled the land with idols, false worship, and rebellion against God. The temple still stood, but its purpose had been forgotten. The very book upon which the nation had been founded had been neglected, misplaced, and seemingly lost. Think about that for a moment. The Law of God was not lost in a foreign land or stolen by an enemy army. It was lost in the house of God itself. No one was reading it, no one was teaching it, and few seemed to notice it was missing. As the workers began repairing the temple and handling the money that had been collected for the work, they stumbled upon something infinitely more valuable than silver or gold. While searching through a place dedicated to God, they discovered the true treasure: God’s Word.

What a picture for us today. It is possible for a nation, a church, or even a believer to become so occupied with activity that they lose sight of the very thing that gives life. There are churches filled with programs, productions, and endless activity, yet the Word of God sits neglected. The treasure is still present, but it seems lost amid all the noise. Interestingly, the men in Josiah’s day were simply carrying out their assigned responsibilities when they found it. They weren’t conducting a special archaeological expedition; they were doing the work before them. And in the middle of that ordinary task, God revealed something extraordinary. The same thing often happens in our lives. As we faithfully serve in the places God has assigned us, He reveals Himself through His Word, reminds us of forgotten truths, and redirects our hearts back to what matters most.

When the Book of the Law was read before King Josiah, everything changed. God’s Word exposed the nation’s sin, revealed God’s holiness, and sparked one of the greatest revivals in Judah’s history. That is what Scripture always does. It uncovers, convicts, corrects, and restores. The treasure they found wasn’t merely an ancient scroll; it was the voice of God speaking to His people once again.

Is God’s Word central in your life, or has it become buried beneath the demands and distractions of everyday living? Perhaps, like the workers in the temple, you are simply carrying out the tasks before you. Don’t overlook the possibility that God wants to reveal Himself to you right there. Open His Word. Listen for His voice. The greatest treasure you will ever find is not hidden in wealth, success, or accomplishment. It is found in the presence of God, revealed through the Word of God. You may discover that the treasure you’ve been searching for has been in His house all along.

“One who gives himself to the Word of God reverently and humbly seeking to know the will of God, and then gives himself to prayer… will grow both in grace and in knowledge, becoming a well-rounded follower of Christ.”
