“From the thirteenth year of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah, even to this day, this is the twenty-third year in which the word of the Lord has come to me; and I have spoken to you, rising early and speaking, but you have not listened.” – Jeremiah 25:3
For twenty-three years, Jeremiah faithfully delivered the Word of the Lord to a people who refused to listen. He preached through seasons of rejection, opposition, and indifference. God called him to difficult assignments, dramatic object lessons, and a life of sacrifice. He was mocked, beaten, threatened, and ignored. Yet year after year, Jeremiah continued to proclaim God’s message. From a worldly perspective, his ministry appeared unsuccessful. There were no great crowds responding and no widespread revival. But Jeremiah understood that faithfulness to God mattered more than visible results.
There came a point when the burden became overwhelming. In Jeremiah 20, he poured out his frustration before the Lord. The constant ridicule and opposition had worn him down. He decided he would stop preaching, stop speaking, and simply walk away from the calling. But something happened. God’s Word had become so deeply rooted in his heart that he could not silence it. Jeremiah described it as “a burning fire shut up in my bones.” The more he tried to hold it in, the more impossible it became. His circumstances discouraged him, but God’s calling compelled him.
Many believers experience similar seasons. There are times when obedience feels costly, and ministry feels fruitless. We wonder whether anyone is listening, whether our efforts matter, or whether we’re making any difference at all. Jeremiah reminds us that God’s call is not based on popularity or measurable success. It is rooted in obedience. The same God who sustained Jeremiah through rejection and disappointment still strengthens His people today. He sees every act of faithfulness, every unseen sacrifice, and every seed planted in hope.
If you are weary today, don’t mistake difficulty for failure. If you feel like giving up, remember Jeremiah. The presence of opposition does not mean you are outside God’s will. It may mean you are exactly where He wants you. Let God’s Word continue to burn in your heart. Stay faithful to the calling He has given you, trust Him with the results, and keep moving forward. The God who called you is the God who will sustain you.
“It is not a matter of our equipment, but a matter of our poverty; not of what we bring with us, but of what God puts into us” – Oswald Chambers
