Faith That Keeps Moving Forward

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good testimony.” – Hebrews 11:1-2

The writer of Hebrews was encouraging believers who were being tempted to return to their former way of life. Following Christ had become difficult. The old system of Judaism felt familiar, comfortable, and tangible. Faith in Jesus required trust in what they could not see and confidence in promises not yet fulfilled. To strengthen their resolve, the writer points them back to the heroes of the faith and reminds them that God has always worked through people who trusted His Word, even when circumstances seemed uncertain.

The first examples he presents are Abel and Enoch. Abel offered a sacrifice that was accepted by God because it flowed from faith rather than mere religious duty. Cain brought an offering too, but his heart was not surrendered to the Lord. The difference was not merely in the gift but in the faith behind it. Then we meet Enoch, a man who walked with God in a corrupt and godless generation. While others ignored the Lord, Enoch pleased Him through a life marked by trust and obedience. Both men testify to the same truth: God is not looking for empty rituals or religious performance. He is looking for hearts that believe Him.

Faith remains the foundation of the Christian life today. It is more than wishful thinking; it is confident obedience to God’s Word regardless of circumstances, consequences, or opinions. Faith trusts God’s promises when the path is unclear. Faith obeys when the crowd chooses another direction. Faith continues moving forward even when the world urges us to turn back. The writer of Hebrews was calling his readers to persevere, and that same call comes to us today. The answers we need are not found by retreating to the world’s solutions but by pressing deeper into Christ and His Word.

What challenge is God asking you to face by faith? Have circumstances caused you to hesitate, doubt, or consider turning back? Remember Abel’s worship and Enoch’s walk. Both chose faith over sight. Trust God’s promises even when you cannot see the outcome. Keep walking with Him, keep believing His Word, and keep moving forward. The God who was faithful to them is faithful to you.

“Faith enables the believing soul to treat the future as present and the invisible as seen.” – J. Oswald Sanders
