“Stand in the ways and see,And ask for the old paths, where the good way is, And walk in it;
Then you will find rest for your souls. But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’ “- Jeremiah 6:16
Through Jeremiah, God called His people to return to the paths they had abandoned. They had wandered from true worship and faithful obedience, replacing God’s ways with their own. The invitation was simple: stop, look, ask, and walk in the good way. Yet their response was heartbreaking: “We will not walk in it.” Their problem was not a lack of direction but a refusal to follow it. God was offering rest, but they preferred rebellion.
We see this same invitation echoed in the life of Matthew. Before Jesus called him, Matthew was a tax collector, enriching himself while serving the oppressors of his own people. He was despised, rejected, and spiritually lost. But everything changed when Jesus walked into his life. Matthew left his old path and followed Christ. Soon he was inviting other tax collectors and sinners to meet the Savior. While the religious leaders criticized Jesus for associating with such people, Jesus reminded them that the sick need a physician. He came to rescue those who knew they needed help.
Jeremiah’s generation was much like many societies today. Outwardly, things appeared stable and prosperous, but spiritually they were drifting farther from God. The greatest danger is not always crisis; sometimes it is comfort. When people become satisfied with life apart from God, they stop seeking the One who gives true life. Yet God’s invitation remains unchanged. Return to the old paths. Return to the truth of His Word. Return to the simplicity of walking with Him. The good way has never changed.
What path are you walking today? Have you become distracted by the pressures, pleasures, and pace of life? Are you looking for rest in everything except the Lord? God’s invitation is still open: stop and seek the ancient paths. Open His Word. Listen to His voice. Draw near to Him. The world promises peace but cannot deliver it. The old path may not be the popular path, but it is the path that leads to rest for your soul.
“The old paths are the safest paths. The old truths are the best truths, and the old faith is the best faith.”
