“Ask a sign for yourself from the Lord your God…” – Isaiah 7:11-13
God offered King Ahaz something extraordinary—an invitation to trust Him. Judah was facing the threat of war, fear was rising, and Ahaz was overwhelmed. So God sent Isaiah to steady his heart and remind him that the real battle was not against Syria or Israel, but against unbelief. God told Ahaz plainly: “If you will not believe, surely you shall not be established.” To strengthen his faith, God even invited him to ask for a sign—any sign, from the depths to the heights. It was a gracious offer from a patient God.
But Ahaz refused. His words sounded spiritual—“I will not test the Lord”—but his heart was proud. He didn’t want a sign because he didn’t want to trust God. A sign would require surrender. A sign would require admitting he wasn’t in control. A sign would expose his need. So he hid behind religious language while rejecting God’s command. His pride led Judah into defeat, not because God failed, but because Ahaz refused to believe. When God instructs us to act, obedience is not testing Him—it is trusting Him.
Ahaz’s story is a warning for us. Pride often keeps us from receiving God’s help. We resist surrender because it means admitting weakness. We avoid prayer because it means admitting need. We refuse God’s invitation because it means giving up control. Ahaz wasn’t destroyed by enemies—he was destroyed by his own unwillingness to trust the God who reached out to him. God offered deliverance, but Ahaz chose independence. And independence from God always leads to defeat.
Where are you resisting God today? Is there a struggle you refuse to surrender because pride whispers, “Handle it yourself”? Is there a step of faith you avoid because obedience feels like weakness? God invited Ahaz to trust Him—and He invites you too. Don’t follow Ahaz’s path. When God calls, respond. When He offers help, receive it. When He asks you to believe, bow your heart. Pride leads to defeat, but surrender leads to life. Today, choose to trust Jesus and let Him take His rightful place in your life.
