Jesus wasn’t confused, nor was He seeking advice—He was testing the faith of His disciples. Philip and the others had already witnessed Jesus heal the sick and perform miracles, yet they had never seen anything like what was about to unfold. Standing before thousands of hungry people, Jesus asked a question that exposed their hearts: would they trust what they saw, or trust who He was?
The disciples immediately looked at their resources and concluded they were insufficient. The money wasn’t enough. The boy’s small lunch wasn’t enough. Their abilities weren’t enough. They measured the problem by human limitations instead of divine power. Yet Jesus already knew exactly what He would do. He took what seemed insignificant, blessed it, multiplied it, and fed thousands—with baskets of leftovers still remaining. The miracle wasn’t just in the provision; it was in revealing that what is surrendered to Jesus becomes more than enough.
Jesus often tests our faith the same way. He asks questions not because He lacks answers, but because He wants us to see where our trust lies. We look at our abilities, our resources, our circumstances, and declare them “not enough.” But Jesus invites us to bring what little we have and place it in His hands. He delights in doing what we cannot do, turning scarcity into abundance and impossibility into testimony.
Where is Jesus testing your faith today? Maybe you feel inadequate, under-resourced, or overwhelmed. Maybe you’ve already decided that what you have is “not enough.” But Jesus already knows what He will do. He simply asks you to trust Him, surrender what you have, and believe that He can multiply it. Remember the promise: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Let today be the day you place your confidence not in your own ability, but in His power to do what you cannot.
