From Beneath or From Above?

“And He said to them, ‘You are from beneath; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.'” – John 8:23-24

Jesus spoke these words to a crowd divided—some believed Him, others rejected Him. The issue was not ignorance; it was unbelief. The Messiah promised throughout the Old Testament was standing before them, fulfilling prophecy, teaching truth, performing miracles—yet many refused to acknowledge Him. Their rejection wasn’t due to lack of evidence but lack of willingness to bow to the One sent from above.

Jesus’ warning was direct: without believing in Him, they would die in their sins. These were religious people, descendants of Abraham, faithful in rituals and traditions. Yet Scripture is clear—every person is born into sin (Psalm 51:5), all fall short of God’s glory (Romans 3:23), and none are righteous on their own (Romans 3:10). Good intentions, moral living, or cultural identity could not save them. Like all humanity, they needed a Savior. Without faith in Christ, even the most respectable person remains lost.

Many today assume they are “good with God” because they try hard, love their families, work honestly, or avoid major sins. But Jesus’ words cut through that illusion. True belief is not merely agreeing with facts—it is a transformed life. Our habits, choices, and patterns reveal whether we belong to Christ or to the world. Scripture warns plainly that those who persist in sin without repentance will not inherit the kingdom of God. These are not human opinions; they are God’s words, spoken in love and truth.

Where do you stand today? Have you truly believed in Christ, or have you assumed you were right with God because of your own goodness? Look honestly at your life—do your daily habits reflect a follower of Jesus or a follower of the world? Salvation is not complicated: believe in Jesus as Savior, trust His finished work on the cross, and surrender your life to Him. When you do, you will be forgiven, freed, and no longer in danger of dying in your sins. It really is that simple.
