“But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference…” – Romans 3:21-22
Paul reaches the great turning point of Romans with two hopeful words: “But now.” After spending chapter after chapter proving that both Jew and Gentile are sinners, he unveils God’s solution. Many of the Jews believed their heritage, religious observances, and devotion to the law placed them in right standing with God. Paul shatters that misconception. The law was never intended to save; it was given to reveal our need for salvation. It exposes sin, but it cannot remove it.
The law functions much like a mirror. A mirror can show us that our face is dirty, but it cannot wash us clean. In the same way, God’s law reveals our guilt but cannot provide our forgiveness. Rules, rituals, traditions, and good works are powerless to make a sinner righteous before a holy God. That righteousness comes only through faith in Jesus Christ. Faith is not a blind leap into the unknown. It is a confident trust based upon the testimony of God’s Word. Scripture points us unmistakably to Christ, who fulfilled the law, bore our punishment, and provided the righteousness we could never earn for ourselves.
Paul emphasizes that this righteousness is available “to all and on all who believe.” The ground is level at the foot of the cross. No one is saved because of religious background, family heritage, personal goodness, or spiritual achievements. The gift of salvation is offered to all, but it must be received through faith. And when that faith is genuine, it produces a transformed life marked by obedience, gratitude, and surrender to the One who saved us.
Take a moment to consider where your confidence rests. Are you trusting in your church attendance, your moral behavior, your traditions, or your accomplishments? Or are you resting completely in the righteousness of Christ? Faith in Jesus is not merely agreeing with facts about Him—it is entrusting your life to Him. If you have received that gift, let your walk reflect your profession. And if you have not, today is the day to place your faith in the One who provides the righteousness you could never achieve on your own.
“We are justified by faith alone because faith is the instrument by which we receive Christ and His righteousness.” — John Calvin
