“Now a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a garland of twelve stars. Then being with child, she cried out in labor and in pain to give birth.” – Revelation 12:1-2
When Scripture speaks of spiritual warfare, it doesn’t leave us guessing about who is involved. Revelation 12 pulls back the curtain and shows us a cosmic conflict far bigger than anything on earth. John sees “a woman clothed with the sun” (Revelation 12:1–2, NKJV)—a picture of God’s people—and from her comes the Child, Jesus Christ. But immediately, the enemy appears: “a great, fiery red dragon” whose tail sweeps a third of the stars from heaven (Revelation 12:3–4, NKJV). Those stars are fallen angels—demons—who rebelled with Satan. This is not myth or metaphor. It is the unseen reality behind the visible world. And Paul reminds us that our struggle is “not against flesh and blood” but against organized, strategic forces of darkness (Ephesians 6:12, NKJV).
Yet the enemy is not the only one with an army. Revelation 12:7 shows Michael and the holy angels waging war against the dragon. Scripture describes their number as “ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands” (Revelation 5:11, NKJV)—a number so vast it stretches the limits of language. Two‑thirds of the angels remained loyal to God, and they are active today: ministering, protecting, and carrying out God’s will. Michael appears throughout Scripture as a warrior and protector, contending with Satan (Jude 9) and standing guard over God’s people (Daniel 10, 12). Satan is not God’s equal—God has no equal. If there is a counterpart in this war, it is Michael versus Satan, holy angels versus fallen angels, light versus darkness.
And then Scripture shows us the final combatants: Israel, Jesus Christ, and believers. Israel is pictured as the woman God protects (Revelation 12:6). Christ is the Child who ascended to the throne (Revelation 12:5). And believers are called “the brethren” who overcome “by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony” (Revelation 12:11, NKJV). This war is not ancient history—it is present reality. Even today, believers around the world stand firm under pressure, refusing to deny Christ. They are living out Revelation 12:11 with courage and conviction. The battlefield is real. The forces are massive. But the victory belongs to Christ.
Stand firm knowing who fights for you and who fights against you. You are not a spectator in this war—you are a participant, equipped with the armor of God, strengthened by the Spirit of God, and covered by the blood of the Lamb. The picture is big—but your God is bigger.
“The Christian life is war, and the sooner we recognize it, the better prepared we will be.” — A.W. Tozer
