When Your Mind Won’t Sit Still

“In the multitude of my anxieties within me,
Your comforts delight my soul.” – Psalm 94:19

The psalmist in Psalm 94 is honest about the weight pressing on his soul. He speaks of a “multitude of anxieties”—a phrase that paints a picture of troubles as countless as the sand or stars. These weren’t small concerns; they were thoughts that robbed him of calmness, disturbed his peace, and filled his mind with doubt. He was overwhelmed by wave after wave of anxious thoughts, just like many of us feel today. His transparency reminds us that even the saints of old wrestled with the same emotional storms we face.

But the psalmist doesn’t leave us drowning in despair. He shifts our attention to God’s comforts, a word that describes the easing of sorrow after a season of mourning. It’s the picture of someone wrapping a warm blanket around you on a cold, weary day. It’s the embrace of a loved one after tears have fallen. It’s the moment when the storm inside begins to settle because someone stronger is holding you. That is the comfort God brings—deep, soul‑restoring peace that reaches places no human words can touch. Just as David said, “In the multitude of my anxieties within me, Your comforts delight my soul” (Psalm 94:19 NKJV).

Life is full of real worries—bills, sickness, deadlines, relationships, uncertainty. We feel them, we think about them, and sometimes they consume us. But like the psalmist, we must not stay in the place of despair. We acknowledge our emotions, but we don’t let them rule us. Instead, we turn our minds toward God’s promises, His presence, and His comfort. He invites us to cast our cares upon Him because “He cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7 NKJV). He alone gives rest to the anxious soul.

Whatever anxieties are filling your heart today, bring them to the Lord. Don’t carry them alone. Let His comfort wrap around you like that warm blanket on a cold day. Let His promises steady your thoughts. Let His presence quiet your fears. When the multitude of anxious thoughts rise up, turn to the One who delights your soul. He is your peace, your rest, and your comfort—today and always.

“Anxiety does not empty tomorrow of its sorrows, but only empties today of its strength.” — C.H. Spurgeon
