The Witness the World is Watching

“You who make your boast in the law, do you dishonor God through breaking the law?  For “the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you,” as it is written.” – Romans 2:23-24

Paul’s words in Romans 2:23–24 are strong, but they are spoken with a shepherd’s heart. He was writing to believers in Rome—a church he had never visited but deeply cared for. From Corinth, he penned this letter to prepare them for his coming and to strengthen their walk with Christ. It’s important to remember that he wasn’t addressing unbelievers; he was speaking to the church. To people who knew the Scriptures. To people who claimed to follow God.

Why does that matter? Because Paul was confronting a dangerous pattern—hypocrisy. These believers were telling others how to live while secretly doing the same things they condemned. They judged outward sins while ignoring the hidden sins of their own hearts. Paul quotes Isaiah and Ezekiel to show that when God’s people live double‑lives, the world doesn’t see Christ—they see contradiction. Instead of drawing people to Jesus, their behavior was pushing people away. The name of God was being blasphemed because their lives didn’t match their message.

Paul wasn’t attacking them; he was exhorting them. He wanted heart change, not outward performance. He modeled what loving correction looks like—truth spoken with Scripture, humility, and genuine care. He learned this not from books or training but from walking closely with Christ, dying to self daily, and letting the Spirit shape his character. His desire was simple: that the church would live in such a way that their lives pointed people toward Jesus, not away from Him.

Today, take a moment to examine your own life. Does your walk match your words? Do people see Christ in your actions, attitudes, and reactions? Or do they see something else? Ask the Lord to reveal any area where your life reflects self instead of Him. Invite Him to align your heart with His Word so that your life becomes a light that leads others to Christ rather than a shadow that turns them away. Let your life honor the name you carry.

“Magnify God, mortify the flesh, simplify your life. Take up your cross and learn of Jesus Christ, to die to this world that He may raise you up in due time.” – A.W. Tozer
