The Battle You Want To Lose

“…do not fight against the Lord God of your fathers, for you shall not prosper!”. – 2 Chronicles 13:12

Abijah stepped into leadership at a turbulent moment in Israel’s history. David was gone. Solomon was gone. Rehoboam was gone. The kingdom was divided, and now Abijah—Rehoboam’s son—found himself facing Jeroboam’s massive army of 800,000 “mighty men of valor.” His own army was only half that size. From every angle, it looked hopeless. Yet Abijah stood on a hill and boldly declared to the enemy that they would lose. Why? Because he knew the real battle wasn’t between soldiers—it was between rebellion and the living God. And no one wins fighting against Him.

What makes this moment even more heartbreaking is that Jeroboam’s army wasn’t a foreign nation—it was Israel. Abijah’s own people. They had drifted from God, hardened their hearts, and chased after the world’s offerings. Their rebellion led them to fight against their own brothers. So Abijah cried out, warning them not to resist the Lord, reminding them of the covenant, the priests, the sacrifices, and the presence of God. He wasn’t taunting them—he was pleading with them. But they refused to listen. And just as Abijah warned, they did not prosper.

Jesus later echoed this same truth when He said, “He who is not with Me is against Me.” Many people believe in God in a general sense, but Jesus said belief alone is not enough—we must be “born again.” That means surrendering our lives to Him, trusting His sacrifice on the cross, and allowing His Spirit to make us new. Abijah’s warning still rings true today: resisting God never ends well. Fighting against His truth, His Word, or His call only leads to loss.

Today, consider where you stand with the Lord. Are you resisting Him in any area of your life? Are you fighting His will, His Word, or His call to surrender? Like Abijah said, “Do not fight against the Lord… for you shall not prosper!” The only path to victory is surrender. The only way to life is through Jesus. Have you given Him your heart? Will you stop resisting and trust Him fully today?
