When the World Outworks the Church

“So the master commended the unjust steward because he had dealt shrewdly. For the sons of this world are more shrewd in their generation than the sons of light.” – Luke 16:8

Jesus tells a surprising parable about an unjust steward who knew his position was coming to an end. Faced with an uncertain future, he acted quickly and strategically, making plans for what lay ahead. Jesus did not praise the man’s dishonesty; He praised his foresight. The steward understood that his present actions had future consequences. He was shrewd enough to prepare for what was coming. Christ’s point was simple but piercing: people of this world often show more determination in preparing for temporary things than believers show in preparing for eternal things.

The sons of this world work hard to secure their future. They know their bank balances, retirement accounts, investments, schedules, and long‑term plans. They carefully manage what matters to them. Yet Jesus observes that many of the “sons of light” fail to show the same diligence when it comes to eternal priorities. We can become experts in earthly affairs while remaining unfamiliar with God’s Word. We can invest enormous energy into what will one day pass away while giving little attention to what will last forever. The contrast should cause every believer to pause and reflect.

Jesus calls His followers to live with eternal wisdom. He is not condemning planning or responsibility; rather, He is asking whether our greatest efforts are directed toward the things that matter most. Treasures on earth will eventually fade, but treasures in heaven will endure forever. A wise steward sees beyond today and lives in light of eternity. The question is not whether we are preparing for the future—the question is which future we are preparing for.

Take an honest inventory of your life. Do you know more about your finances than you do about God’s promises? Are you investing more effort into temporary success than eternal significance? God has entrusted you with time, gifts, opportunities, and resources. Use them wisely. Live with eternity in view, store up treasures in heaven, and become the kind of steward who is not only prepared for tomorrow, but ready for forever.

“The value of anything is determined by its relationship to eternity.”
