A Thief In The Night

“For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night…” – 1 Thessalonians 5:2-3

Paul shifts from the rapture of the church to the sobering reality of the Day of the Lord—a period of judgment that follows the catching away of believers. Teaching prophecy in a devotional format can be challenging, but Paul’s message is clear: this day will arrive suddenly, unexpectedly, and decisively. The Day of the Lord is not a single 24‑hour event but a season of divine judgment, described throughout Scripture and detailed in Revelation 3–19.

This period is known as “Jacob’s trouble” (Jeremiah 30:7), a seven‑year span in which God brings judgment upon a world that has rejected Him. It will be a time of suffering unlike anything humanity has ever seen. This is why believers plead with their loved ones to come to Christ—it is not arrogance or superiority, but genuine love and concern for their eternity. Paul says this day will come like a thief in the night, catching off guard those who feel secure in earthly peace and safety. For the unbeliever, destruction will come suddenly, and escape will be impossible.

Many live with little thought of eternity, consumed with the comforts and routines of life. But Paul warns that indifference is dangerous. The early church lived in anticipation of Christ’s return, but today many grow weary of hearing about it, just as Peter predicted (2 Peter 3:3–4). Yet the warning remains: Jesus will come when least expected, and those unprepared will be left behind. The question is not whether He will return—it is whether we are ready.

When you woke up today, did you consider that Jesus could return before nightfall? If not, your heart may be drifting from anticipation. Scripture calls us to live alert, awake, and ready. For the believer, this means examining your walk and aligning your life with eternity. For the unbeliever—or the one with divided loyalties—this is the moment to respond. Read 1 John 5:9–13 and settle the matter. Jesus will come like a thief in the night. Make sure you are ready to meet Him.
