Living For What Truly Matters

“Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain…” – John 12:24–26

As Jesus moved toward Jerusalem, the shadow of the cross grew long. The religious leaders had already made up their minds: if they couldn’t silence Him through arguments or politics, they would silence Him through murder. Why such hostility? Because Jesus threatened the life they loved. They feared losing their position, their comfort, and their influence. Their confession reveals their hearts: “If we let Him alone… the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation” (John 11:48 NKJV). They weren’t defending truth—they were defending their lifestyle.

Their fear drove them to shocking extremes. Not only did they plot to kill Jesus, but they also sought to kill Lazarus because his testimony led many to believe (John 12:10–11). When people love their own lives more than God, they will cling to comfort at any cost. These leaders couldn’t defeat Jesus in debate, couldn’t trap Him in His words, and couldn’t outmaneuver Him politically. So they resorted to the coward’s weapon—false accusations and violence. Their hearts were chained to self‑preservation, not self‑denial. In contrast, Jesus taught that true life comes only through dying to self, just as a grain of wheat must fall into the ground before it can bear fruit.

Jesus’ words cut through every generation: if we cling to this life—its possessions, its comforts, its applause—we lose everything. But if we lay our lives down and follow Him, we gain eternal life. This doesn’t mean abandoning every blessing or relationship; it means surrendering our hearts to Christ as Lord and Savior. It means choosing Him over the temporary treasures of this world. The question is simple: have you done that? And if not—why not today?

Are you holding tightly to a life that cannot last, or surrendering to the Savior who gives eternal life? Ask the Lord to help you die to self, follow Him fully, and live for what truly matters. “Most assuredly I say to you…”—Jesus still calls us to the path that produces much fruit.
