The Rest You Haven’t Entered Yet

“There remains therefore a rest for the people of God.” – Hebrews 4:9

When the writer of Hebrews speaks of “rest,” he reaches back to the story of the Exodus. God delivered Israel out of Egypt—out of bondage—and led them toward the Promised Land. But His desire was never for them to wander in the wilderness. They were meant to cross the Jordan and enter Canaan, a land overflowing with blessing. Yet doubt stopped them. Fear held them back. Some even longed to return to Egypt, the very place of their slavery. Egypt is a picture of sin, and when we accept Christ, we are delivered from that bondage (Colossians 1:13–14). That deliverance is our first rest—the rest of salvation.

But God had more for Israel than simply being rescued from Egypt. He wanted them to enter Canaan and enjoy the inheritance He had prepared. Many hymns portray crossing the Jordan as dying and entering heaven, but Canaan was full of battles, failures, and victories—hardly a picture of eternity. Instead, crossing the Jordan represents the believer stepping into a life of surrender, obedience, and spiritual inheritance now (Ephesians 1:3). Hebrews describes three rests: the Sabbath rest—our salvation; the Canaan rest—our daily submission and enjoyment of God’s blessings; and the future rest—our eternal home with Him. The word used in Hebrews 4:9 speaks of a final, eternal Sabbath—a rest that still awaits us.

Many Christians experience the first and last rest—they are saved, and they know heaven is coming. But they never enter the middle rest. They never cross the Jordan. They wander spiritually, living forgiven but not fully surrendered, redeemed but not walking in the fullness of God’s blessings. Doubt, fear, and disobedience keep them in the wilderness. God invites us not only to leave Egypt but to take the land—to step into the joy, peace, and victory He has already given us in Christ.

Ask yourself today: Have you crossed the Jordan? Are you walking in obedience, reading God’s Word, and taking steps of faith to claim the blessings He has for you? Don’t settle for wandering. Step into the life of surrender and spiritual inheritance God designed for you. The land is yours—go in and take it.

“The Canaan rest for Israel is a picture of the spiritual rest we find in Christ when we surrender to Him.” – Warren Wiersbe
