“Now the Lord said to Joshua: ‘Do not be afraid, nor be dismayed; take all the people of war with you, and arise, go up to Ai. See, I have given into your hand the king of Ai, his people, his city, and his land. And you shall do to Ai and its king as you did to Jericho and its king…'” – Joshua 8:1-2
After Israel’s defeat in Joshua 7, the camp was shaken. Achan’s hidden sin had brought the nation to its knees, and Joshua felt the weight of failure pressing heavily on his heart. But once the sin was confessed and dealt with, God immediately stepped back in with hope. He didn’t scold Joshua. He didn’t rehearse the failure. Instead, He reminded Joshua of victory—of Jericho, of God’s faithfulness, of what had already been won. God’s message was simple: The past is forgiven. Now rise and move forward.
Joshua had been discouraged, replaying the sting of defeat. But God redirected his focus. He pointed Joshua toward the next battle, the next step, the next victory. God’s heart is always to restore, never to crush. When sin is confessed, He does not keep it on display. He does not hang it over our heads. He buries it. He forgets it. He replaces it with renewed purpose and fresh courage. Joshua needed to hear that, and so do we. God does not define His children by their last failure—He defines them by His grace.
Many believers live with their sins constantly before them, weighed down by guilt God has already removed. But Jesus dealt with our sin once for all on the cross. When we confess it, it is finished. It is not recalled. It is not remembered. It is not held against us. God wants His people to rise, not remain defeated. He wants us to walk in the victory He has already secured. Just as He told Joshua, He tells us: Do not be afraid. Do not be dismayed. Arise.
Are you being reminded of past sin today? If it has not been dealt with, bring it to Jesus—He is ready to forgive. If it has been confessed, then lift your head. God is not pointing to your last battle lost; He is pointing to the last battle won. He fought it for you. He finished it for you. Now He calls you to arise and walk forward in His victory.
