The Beauty of Unity

“Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity. It is like precious oil upon the head, running down on the beard…” – Psalm 133:1-2

David knew the value of unity because he inherited a nation once torn apart. After years of division, Israel was finally united under his leadership (2 Samuel 5). Psalm 133 may have been written during that season of healing—a moment when God’s people stood together again. To describe the beauty of unity, David used the imagery of anointing oil, something sacred, fragrant, and deeply meaningful in Israel’s worship.

Anointing oil symbolized the Holy Spirit’s empowering presence. When the high priest was anointed, the oil flowed from his head, down his beard, and over the twelve stones on his chest—each stone representing a tribe of Israel. It was a picture of the entire nation being covered, saturated, and unified under the Spirit of God. Unity was not merely people getting along; it was the Spirit binding hearts together for God’s purposes. Today, we live in a fractured world—political division, cultural tension, and even believers aligning themselves more with earthly leaders than with Christ. But true unity is not found in parties, personalities, or platforms. It is found in Jesus alone.

Unity is not achieved by human effort but by spiritual surrender. When God’s people walk in the Spirit, they major on eternal things rather than temporary differences. They see Christ above culture, Scripture above opinion, and love above division. Unity becomes precious again—like oil flowing down, covering God’s people with grace.
