“Friend, why have you come?” – Matthew 26:50
These words were spoken in one of the most heartbreaking moments in Scripture. Judas approached Jesus in Gethsemane with a crowd carrying swords and clubs, ready to arrest Him. He greeted Jesus with a kiss—a symbol of affection twisted into an act of betrayal—and called Him Rabbi, merely a teacher. Yet Jesus responded with a word of kindness: friend. Even in betrayal, Jesus revealed His heart. He was offering Judas one last opportunity to consider what he was doing, one last moment to turn back.
That question echoes through time and lands gently on our own hearts: “Friend, why have you come?” Why do we come to Jesus? Is it only for what He can give—help, blessing, comfort, answers? Or do we come because we love Him, because we recognize who He truly is and what He has done for us? Jesus does not push us away or shame us for mixed motives. Instead, He invites us to examine our hearts honestly. He welcomes us to come closer, not for profit or gain, but for relationship. And in that relationship, He asks for the one thing only we can give—our lives.
When Jesus asks, “Friend, why have you come?” He is not condemning; He is inviting. He is calling us to surrender, to trust, to walk with Him fully. He is offering hope—hope that our past does not define us, hope that our failures do not disqualify us, hope that our future can be transformed by His grace. Judas walked away from that hope. We don’t have to.
If Jesus is asking you today, “Friend, why have you come?” how will you answer? Will you come to Him only for what He can give, or will you come to surrender your life into His hands? He stands ready to receive you, to forgive you, and to lead you into the life He designed for you. May your answer be, “Lord, I come to give You my life.”
