“And do you seek great things for yourself? Do not seek them; for behold, I will bring adversity on all flesh,” says the Lord. “But I will give your life to you as a prize in all places, wherever you go.”
– Jeremiah 45:5
Baruch, Jeremiah’s scribe, came from a respected family and likely had opportunities for influence and comfort in the palace. Yet he chose a quieter, less glamorous path—serving alongside a prophet who was rejected, mocked, and imprisoned. By the time we reach Jeremiah 45, Baruch is discouraged. He cries, “Woe is me… I find no rest” (Jeremiah 45:3 NKJV). Perhaps he felt overlooked. Perhaps he wondered why his life hadn’t turned out the way he expected. Maybe he even questioned whether serving in Jeremiah’s shadow was worth it. God responds not with rebuke, but with clarity: “Do you seek great things for yourself? Do not seek them.” In other words—Baruch, stay faithful where I placed you.
God reminded Baruch that greatness in His kingdom is not measured by position, spotlight, or earthly success. It is measured by obedience. Baruch’s role was behind the scenes, but it was essential. Without him, Jeremiah’s prophecies would not have been recorded or preserved. God promised Baruch protection—not a promotion. He promised presence—not prestige. And Baruch stayed. Like many faithful servants in Scripture—Andrew, who brought Peter to Jesus; the unnamed boy who offered his loaves and fish; the women who quietly supported Jesus’ ministry—Baruch fulfilled his calling without applause, yet with eternal impact.
What about you? Has God placed you in a role that feels hidden or unrecognized? Are you tempted to chase something easier, more visible, or more impressive? Remember: God calls us to be faithful, not famous. He places each of us where we can bring Him the most glory. Your role matters—especially if no one sees it but Him. Serve with excellence. Stay the course. Let God lift His name through your life, not your ambition.
Ask the Lord to help you embrace the role He has given you today. Lay down the desire for “great things” and pick up the joy of faithful service. Whether your work is seen or unseen, do it for His glory. God will guard your life and honor your obedience wherever He leads you.
“In God’s service, the place of the servant is not the important thing, but the spirit in which he serves.”
— Andrew Murray
