“For I am the least of the apostles, who am not worthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am.” – 1 Corinthians 15:9–10
Do you ever wonder whether Paul carried the weight of his past? I believe he did. The enemy surely whispered reminders of the Christians he hunted, the families he tore apart, the violence he once celebrated. Paul had been a religious extremist—zealous, feared, and deadly. And now, even after Jesus transformed him, he still had to live with the memory of who he used to be. Jesus wipes our past clean, but Satan loves to drag it back up. Yet Paul refused to let shame define him. Instead, he anchored his identity in one truth: “By the grace of God I am what I am.”
Paul knew the battle for identity begins in the mind. That’s why he told believers to “put on the helmet of salvation” (Ephesians 6:17 NKJV)—a daily reminder that we are forgiven, redeemed, and made new. He also wrote, “forgetting those things which are behind… I press toward the goal” (Philippians 3:13–14 NKJV). Paul wasn’t pretending his past didn’t exist; he was refusing to let it control his future. Scripture tells us to take every thought captive and to think on what is true, noble, and pure (Philippians 4). This isn’t positive thinking—it’s biblical thinking. It’s choosing God’s truth over the enemy’s lies.
So what about you? Are you being haunted by your past—your failures, your regrets, your old identity? Are you letting those memories take root and weigh you down? When Satan reminds you of who you were, don’t argue with him—remind yourself of who you are in Christ and where you’re going. Your future is secure, your sins are forgiven, and your identity is sealed in grace. You are more than a conqueror through Him who loves you. Put on the helmet of salvation today. Walk in the freedom Jesus purchased for you. The battle is already won.
Ask God to renew your mind today. When old memories rise up, speak God’s truth over them. Declare, “By the grace of God I am what I am.” Refuse to live chained to a past Jesus already buried. Lift your eyes to the future He has prepared for you, and walk forward in the confidence of His grace.
“Only the man who has known his own sin can truly know the grace of God.” — A.W. Tozer
