New Year, Fresh Wonder

“And Joseph and His mother marveled at those things which were spoken of Him.” – Luke 2:33

Joseph and Mary already carried a great deal of truth in their hearts. They had heard Gabriel’s announcement. They had watched shepherds rush in from the fields, breathless with the message of angels. They knew—without question—that their baby was the promised Messiah. And yet, when Simeon stepped forward in the Temple and spoke over their Child, Scripture says they marveled. Not because the message was new, but because God was confirming it through another voice. Sometimes the Lord whispers something to our hearts, and then He sends someone—unexpected, unplanned—to say the very same thing. And we sit back in awe, thinking, “Lord… how could they know?” That is exactly what Joseph and Mary experienced.

Simeon, a devout and Spirit-led man, recognized Jesus instantly. He spoke with clarity, confidence, and authority—words that only heaven could have revealed. Imagine Mary and Joseph, poor and humble, standing in the Temple as this respected man treated their Child like royalty. Their baby, born in a stable and wrapped in simple cloth, was being honored as the King He truly was. The word “marveled” carries the idea of agreeing with God—of saying, “Yes, Lord, this is true… but how could anyone else see it?” God was confirming His promise through another witness, strengthening their faith and reminding them that His Word never returns void.

God still works this way today. He speaks to our hearts through Scripture, prayer, and the quiet nudges of the Holy Spirit. And then, at just the right moment, He sends a confirming voice—a friend, a sermon, a stranger, a circumstance—to remind us that He sees us and He keeps His promises. Has God been speaking something to your heart? Pay attention to the confirming voices He sends. When God repeats Himself, it is never by accident—it is His kindness, His reassurance, His way of strengthening your faith. Like Joseph and Mary, may you marvel again at the God who sees, who speaks, and who confirms His promises in ways you never expected.

“God graciously employs human instruments to confirm His word unto us, that we may be the more fully assured of His will.” – A.W. Pink
