Your Plans or His Purpose?

“Come now, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city…’ whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor… Instead you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills…’” – James 4:13–17

James reminds us that life is fragile—like a vapor that appears for a moment and then vanishes. We often make plans with confidence, assuming tomorrow is guaranteed. But Scripture warns that boasting in our own plans is arrogance. It’s not wrong to plan, but it is wrong to plan without God. And James goes even further: sin isn’t only doing what we shouldn’t do—it’s also failing to do what we should do. King Saul learned this the hard way. When God called him to leadership, he hid behind the equipment (1 Samuel 10). He knew what God wanted, but fear held him back. God always knows where we are, and He always knows when we’re avoiding His will.

Peter responded differently. When Jesus stepped into his boat and said, “Launch out into the deep,” Peter obeyed—even though it meant leaving behind a thriving fishing business and stepping into the unknown. That is true obedience. Peter didn’t boast about tomorrow; he simply followed the Lord’s voice today. Many times we cling to our own plans, convinced they are better, while God is calling us to something entirely different. We say, “I’m going to do this or that,” but God says, “If the Lord wills.” The question is not whether God has a calling for us—He does. The question is whether we will hide like Saul or launch out like Peter.

Has God been speaking to you about His will recently? Has He been nudging your heart, stirring your spirit, or opening a door? Don’t ignore it. Don’t delay. Don’t hide behind the “equipment” of excuses, fear, or comfort. Life is a vapor, and obedience is urgent. Step out in faith and trust that God will steady you, guide you, and catch you if you fall.
