“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls, who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it.” – Matthew 13:45-46
In Matthew 13, Jesus teaches the crowds through parables, revealing deep spiritual truths in simple stories. Later, when He is alone with His disciples, He explains that the Kingdom of Heaven will involve a final separation—believers gathered to God, unbelievers cast away. Then He shares the parable of the pearl of great price, a picture of something so valuable that once found, it becomes worth surrendering everything else.
Jesus’ meaning is clear: once a person truly finds Him, nothing in this world compares. He is the treasure above all treasures, the One worth giving up every lesser pursuit. When we surrender fully to Christ, we become new creations—old things pass away, and all things become new (2 Corinthians 5:17). A.W. Tozer warned that simply acknowledging Christ’s existence is not saving faith; true faith requires obedience, surrender, and a willingness to lay down everything that competes with Him. The merchant didn’t hesitate—he joyfully sold all he had because the pearl was worth it.
History can prove Jesus died on a cross, but only faith can embrace why He did. That requires laying down our pride, our logic, our dreams, our traditions—everything. Jesus is the pearl of great price, and He calls us to value Him above all else. The question is not whether He is worth everything; the question is whether we are willing to give everything.
What are you holding onto today? What competes with Christ for your heart? The merchant sold all to gain the pearl—are you willing to surrender your plans, comforts, and desires to follow Jesus fully? May we be people who joyfully “sell” everything and pursue the One treasure that will never fade.
