Hope in Deep Waters

“Save me, O God! For the waters have come up to my neck. I sink in deep mire, where there is no standing; I have come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me. I am weary with my crying; my throat is dry; my eyes fail while I wait for my God.” – Psalm 69:1–3

David writes these words from a place of raw, overwhelming despair. This is the same David who stood fearless before Goliath, the warrior whose name struck fear into enemy nations—yet here he feels like he is drowning. His emotions are vivid: waters rising to his neck, sinking in mud, eyes failing from waiting. Even the strongest among us reach moments where our strength collapses. But notice what David does with his despair—he brings it straight to God. His cry for rescue is not a sign of hopelessness; it is a sign of faith. He knows exactly where to run when the waters rise.

Paul understood this same truth when the Lord told him, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9 NKJV). David may have felt like he was at his weakest point, but spiritually, he was at his strongest—because his confidence was no longer in his own ability, but in God alone. Sometimes God allows us to reach the end of ourselves so we will finally lean fully on Him. The world says, “Never show weakness.” But Scripture shows us that weakness is often the doorway to God’s greatest strength. When we stop pretending to be strong, we finally discover the strength that comes from Him.

So what about you today? Do you feel strong? Good—if your strength is anchored in the Lord. But if it’s anchored in yourself, “take heed lest you fall.” Do you feel weak, overwhelmed, or sinking like David? Cry out to God. Lift your eyes to Him. You may feel like you’re in deep waters, but you are right where God can meet you, strengthen you, and lift you up. He has not forgotten you. He has not abandoned you. In your weakness, His power shines brightest.

Bring your weakness to God today. Don’t hide it, deny it, or push it down. Let it drive you to Him. When you humble yourself before the Lord, He promises to lift you up (James 4:10 NKJV). Let your weakness become the place where His strength takes over, His grace sustains you, and His presence restores your soul.
