The Daily Cross

“Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.” – Luke 9:23

Sanctification is not only the work God does in us—it is the call God places on us. It is the demand of daily death. Jesus said, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me” (Luke 9:23, NKJV). This call came right after one of the most stunning miracles in Scripture—the feeding of the five thousand. The crowds were amazed, the disciples were energized, and in that quiet moment afterward, Jesus asked them the most important question a person can answer: “Who do you say that I am?” (Luke 9:20, NKJV). Peter answered with bold faith, “The Christ of God.” These were men who already believed—men who had already passed from death to life. And yet Jesus still said, “Deny yourself. Take up your cross. Daily.”

Regeneration saves us from sin’s penalty, but sanctification keeps us from sin’s power. Paul reminds us, “All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any” (1 Corinthians 6:12, NKJV). Dying daily means surrendering our will to God’s will. It means choosing obedience when our flesh wants comfort. It means saying, “Lord, not my way—Yours.” It means laying down our preferences, our pride, our plans, and our desires so that Christ may reign in us. It shifts our questions from “What’s wrong with doing what I am doing?” to “What’s the spiritual value of what I am doing?” Sanctification is not glamorous. It is not loud. It is not dramatic. It is daily. It is deliberate. It is discipleship.

Daily death looks ordinary, but it produces extraordinary Christlikeness. It looks like a parent waking up early to pray, even though they’re exhausted. It looks like a believer choosing forgiveness instead of bitterness. It looks like a young man turning off his phone because temptation is one click away. These are small crosses—quiet, hidden, unseen by most—but they shape the soul. They are the chisels God uses to carve Christ into our character. This is the call of sanctification: the discipline of denial, the surrender of self, the daily choice to follow Jesus no matter the cost.

Ask God to help you die daily. Lay your will, your wants, and your ways before Him. Sanctification is not about perfection—it’s about surrender. As you choose the cross each day, Christ will shape you, strengthen you, and make you more like Himself. Your daily deaths will become daily victories, and your life will rise as a sweet‑smelling offering to the Lord.

“A true Christian is one who not only has peace of conscience, but war within.” — J.C. Ryle
