“Then the Lord said to Satan, ‘Have you considered My servant Job?'” – Job 1:8
When we open the book of Job, we are immediately confronted with one of the clearest pictures of God’s sovereignty in the face of satanic attack. Job is described as “blameless and upright… one who fears God and shuns evil” (Job 1:8, NKJV). Yet Satan appears before God and admits something stunning: “Have You not made a hedge around him…?” (Job 1:10, NKJV). Before Satan could touch Job, he had to go through God. That hedge wasn’t Job’s doing. It wasn’t the result of his friends praying. It was the sovereign hand of God protecting His servant. Jesus echoes this truth when He says, “Neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand… and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand” (John 10:28–29, NKJV). The true hedge of protection is the hand of God Himself.
But Job’s story also shows us that sometimes God lowers the hedge—not to destroy His children, but to develop them. Satan brought a wind that collapsed a house. Fire fell from heaven. Raiders stole livestock. Disease ravaged Job’s body. His friends accused him. His wife urged him to quit. Yet even in all this, Satan was on a leash. God set the boundary: “Only do not lay a hand on his person” (Job 1:12, NKJV). Later, God allowed physical affliction but again commanded, “Spare his life” (Job 2:6, NKJV). The leash was long, but it was still a leash held firmly in God’s hand. Job’s suffering was severe, but it was never outside the sovereignty of God. Satan could strike, but only with permission. He could wound, but only within limits. He could roar, but he could not overrule God’s purpose.
This same sovereign protection surrounds every believer today. God’s hedge is not based on your performance—it is based on the finished work of Christ. “He has forgiven you all trespasses… having nailed it to the cross” (Colossians 2:13–14, NKJV). Because you stand righteous in Christ, nothing can enter your life unless God allows it, and nothing God allows can overturn His purpose for you. Sometimes God lowers the hedge to discipline, but even then His goal is restoration. Sometimes He lowers it to refine, strengthen, and mature you. But never—never—is it because He has abandoned you.
When hardship comes, do not assume God has stepped away. Remember Job. Remember the hedge. Remember the hand of God that surrounds you. Satan is powerful, but God is sovereign. Satan can strike, but only with permission. Satan can roar, but he cannot rewrite God’s plan. Stand in confidence today: the enemy cannot take one step beyond the boundary God has set. This is the Sovereign Shield.
“Satan is God’s servant, not His equal. He can only act by divine permission, and always to accomplish divine purpose.” — A.W. Pink
