Carried Through the Depths

“So He led them through the depths, as through the wilderness.” – Psalm 106:9

The psalmist paints a powerful picture: God carried His people through the depths—the abyss—and through the wilderness—the barren, uninhabited places. In seasons when life feels overwhelming, when we feel buried beneath the waters or lost in a lonely desert, God does not merely point the way… He carries us through it. Israel saw this firsthand as God parted the Red Sea and guided them through a wilderness they could never have survived alone. His leading is not distant direction—it is personal, present, sustaining care.

Psalm 105 retells the story of Joseph, reminding us that before he ever rose to power in Egypt, he walked through darkness. His brothers threw him into a pit, sold him into slavery, and he endured false accusations and prison. Genesis says his brothers sold him, but Psalm 105 says God sent him. What a perspective. The very moments that felt like betrayal and abandonment were actually steps in God’s perfect plan. Joseph was never alone in the depths. God was shaping him, positioning him, and preparing him to save nations—including his own family. What looked like tragedy was actually divine transportation.

We often feel the same way. There are moments when life drops us into a pit or pushes us into a wilderness. We feel forgotten, misunderstood, or overwhelmed. But God is not absent—He is carrying us. He may not remove the situation immediately, but He will always walk us through it. What feels like being “sold” into hardship may actually be God “sending” you ahead for a greater purpose. His leading is not always comfortable, but it is always intentional.

Are you walking through the depths today? Do you feel alone in a wilderness season? Lift your eyes. God is carrying you even when you cannot feel His arms. Trust His leading, not your surroundings. Keep your eyes on His promises, not your explanations. The same God who sent Joseph ahead is guiding you now—and He will see you through.
