When sin entered the world through Adam, humanity was separated from God and stood in desperate need of a Mediator—someone who could bring two opposing parties back together. Under the Old Covenant, the law revealed God’s holiness but also exposed man’s inability to keep it. Blessings came through obedience, and judgment followed disobedience. Israel’s history in Leviticus and Deuteronomy shows this clearly. The covenant itself wasn’t flawed—man was. We could not keep the law perfectly, and breaking one commandment meant breaking them all (James 2:10). But God, in His mercy, promised something better: a new covenant, one not built on human performance but on divine grace.
This New Covenant was foretold centuries earlier through Jeremiah—a perpetual covenant written not on tablets of stone but on the hearts of God’s people (Jeremiah 31:31–32). It would not depend on man’s obedience but on the perfect obedience of The Man, Christ Jesus. Through His death and resurrection, Jesus became our Mediator, standing between God and humanity and reconciling us through His blood. Unlike the sacrifices of the Old Covenant, His sacrifice was perfect, complete, and offered once for all. The only requirement now is to receive this gift by faith—to be born again by the Holy Spirit and enter into a covenant that cannot be broken.
The Bible declares, “For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 2:5 NKJV). Every person is either standing under the old, faulty covenant of self‑effort or under the new, everlasting covenant of grace. One depends on what you do; the other depends entirely on what Christ has done. One leads to frustration and failure; the other leads to forgiveness, freedom, and fellowship with God.
Which covenant are you living under today? Are you striving to earn God’s favor through your own efforts, or resting in the finished work of Jesus? Don’t cling to what is faulty. Step into the better covenant—built on better promises—through faith in Christ alone.
