Growing Into God’s Call

“Get out of your country, from your family and from your father’s house, to a land that I will show you.” – Genesis 12:1

Before God poured out the Abrahamic covenant—the blessing that would shape nations—He gave Abram a simple but costly command: leave everything familiar. Yet Abram didn’t fully obey at first. Acts 7:2–4 tells us God spoke to him while his father was still alive, but Abram didn’t move until after his father died. And when he finally stepped out, he brought Lot with him, even though God had told him to leave his family behind. Abraham—the father of faith, the patriarch honored by Jews and Christians alike—began his journey with partial obedience. His faith was real, but it was still developing.

That’s encouraging, isn’t it? Abraham didn’t become a giant of faith overnight. God patiently shaped him, corrected him, and grew him. The same man who hesitated in Genesis 12 would later stand on Mount Moriah ready to surrender his son Isaac in complete obedience. God didn’t give up on Abraham when he stumbled; He guided him into maturity. And if God did that with Abraham, He will certainly do it with us. His grace doesn’t excuse disobedience, but it does empower growth. He works with us, not against us, forming obedience in us step by step.

So what about you? Is there an area where God has been speaking, nudging, or calling you to obey—but you’ve only gone halfway? Partial obedience is still disobedience, but God’s grace invites you forward. Like Abraham, you may not become fully surrendered overnight, but you can take the next step today. God’s plan unfolds as we obey, and His grace is sufficient to help us walk it out.

Ask the Lord to show you where you’ve been holding back. Surrender that area to Him today. Trust that the same God who patiently shaped Abraham’s faith is shaping yours. Take the next step of obedience, knowing His grace will meet you there.
