You Cannot Manufacture Unity

“Therefore receive one another, just as Christ also received us, to the glory of God.” – Romans 15:7

There are moments in Scripture when you can almost feel the shift—when a writer moves from teaching to pleading, from instruction to prayer. Romans 15:5 is one of those moments. Paul cries out, “Now may the God of patience and comfort grant you to be like‑minded toward one another, according to Christ Jesus.” He knows unity is not something we manufacture; it is something God must give. We can study, serve, and strive, but unless God supplies patience and encouragement, our efforts fall short. Like the early church in Acts 6, who devoted themselves to prayer and the Word, we too must depend on divine power. Unity is not built by human strength—it is sustained by the God who binds hearts together.

Paul reminds us that unity does not mean uniformity. Believers will differ in opinions, backgrounds, and convictions, yet still walk in harmony. Romans 15:6 calls us to glorify God “with one mind and one mouth.” That doesn’t mean we think the same about everything—it means we love the same Savior and pursue the same purpose. Think of an orchestra: violins, trumpets, flutes, and drums all sound different, yet when they follow the same conductor, they create one beautiful song. In the same way, God calls us to lay aside selfish ambition, imitate Christ’s humility, submit to Scripture, and depend on His power. Only then can we love one another well, bear each other’s burdens, and reflect Christ to the world.

And all of this leads to the highest purpose of unity—the glory of God. Paul says our unity results in one voice lifting praise to “the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 15:6). This title matters. It reminds us that the God we worship is the Father of Christ—the One through whom we come to God, the One who makes us one family. Jesus Himself said, “No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6). When we receive one another as Christ received us (Romans 15:7), we display His grace, His love, and His glory. Unity is not about us—it is about Him.

Pray today for the unity only God can give. Ask Him to fill you with patience, strengthen you with encouragement, and help you love others the way Christ has loved you. Choose humility over pride, Scripture over opinion, and God’s glory over personal preference. And as you depend on His power, may your life help build a church that glorifies God with one mind, one heart, and one voice.

“Unity without the Spirit is no unity at all; only the Holy Ghost can make us of one mind and one heart in Christ.”
—C.H. Spurgeon
