Obedience Sets the Pace

“Therefore, when I have performed this and have sealed to them this fruit, I shall go by way of you to Spain.” – Romans 15:28

Paul’s words in Romans 15:28 reveal a heart anchored in priority, patience, and pastoral wisdom. He had a dream—Spain—but he refused to rush past the present need to chase the future vision. Before he could sail toward new horizons, he had to finish the work God placed in his hands: delivering the offering to the poor saints in Jerusalem. He calls this offering “fruit”—not just money, but evidence. Evidence that the gospel had taken root in Gentile hearts. Evidence that those once far off were now brought near. Evidence that grace had produced generosity, unity, and love.

This offering was more than financial relief—it was theological proof. The early church wrestled with the question of whether Gentiles could truly be saved. But here was undeniable fruit: Gentile believers giving sacrificially to Jewish believers they had never met. As Paul says in 2 Corinthians 9:13, their generosity was “proof of this ministry” (NKJV). It was love where there had been hostility, unity where there had been division, fellowship where there had been suspicion. Paul knew that this gift would “seal the fruit”—it would confirm the authenticity of the Gentile believers and strengthen the unity of the church. Only after that work was complete—after love had been demonstrated and unity built—would Paul move on to Spain.

This is the mark of a servant who understands the heart of God. Paul didn’t let his passion for the unreached overshadow his responsibility to the church. He didn’t let tomorrow’s dream eclipse today’s duty. He knew the gospel must be lived before it is preached, and love must be shown before it is spoken. Sometimes the greatest ministry is not in a distant land but in the faithful act of obedience right in front of us. Sometimes the most powerful fruit is not in the future but in the present moment where God has placed us.

What “fruit” has God placed in your hands to finish today? What act of love, unity, or generosity is He calling you to seal before you move on to the next dream? Don’t rush past the present to chase the future. Strengthen the church. Meet the need. Show the love. And when the fruit is sealed, and the work is complete, God will open the way to your Spain in His perfect time.

“The gospel is not only a message to be believed, but a life to be lived—a life of practical love which is the evidence of its power.”—John Stott
