“We then who are strong ought to bear with the scruples of the weak, and not to please ourselves.” – Romans 15:1
Have you ever seen what happens when a group loses its unity? Whether it’s a workplace, a family, or even a church, division drains strength and destroys momentum. Scripture shows us that the same danger threatens the body of Christ. Jesus Himself prayed, “that they all may be one” (John 17:21), revealing that unity is not optional—it is the very heartbeat of God. When believers turn on each other, criticize each other, or allow bitterness to grow, the work of God is hindered. But when we stand together, something powerful happens. Division cripples us, but unity empowers us.
The early church experienced this firsthand. Jews and Gentiles—two groups separated by centuries of hostility—were suddenly brought together under Christ. It wasn’t easy, but Paul reminded them, “For He Himself is our peace… and has broken down the middle wall of separation” (Ephesians 2:14). Unity is sacred to God. Psalm 133 describes it as precious anointing oil—fragrant, consecrating, overflowing. God desires His people to have “one heart and one way” (Jeremiah 32:38–39). Like a river that gains power when its waters flow in one direction, the church becomes a force for God’s kingdom when its people move together. Even Ezekiel’s vision of two sticks becoming one points to God’s plan to unite His people. And Revelation 21 shows the final picture—one redeemed people, worshiping one God forever.
Unity is not just a future promise—it is a present calling. Discord, jealousy, anger, and selfishness strike a deadly blow to the work of God. Proverbs 6 lists seven things the Lord hates, and one of them is “one who sows discord among brethren.” God calls us to sacrificial love, humility, patience, and grace. The strong must bear with the weak, and the weak must grow alongside the strong. When we choose unity, we reflect the heart of God, the prayer of Jesus, and the power of the Spirit. What God did in the early church, He can do today—if we walk together with one heart and one voice.
Ask God to reveal any division, pride, or bitterness in your heart. Choose today to build bridges, not walls. Encourage someone. Forgive someone. Stand with someone. Fight for unity the way Jesus prayed for it. When God’s people move as one, His power becomes unmistakable—and His glory is seen by the world.
“Unity and love are the hallmarks of true Christianity. Where these are lacking, the gospel is dishonored.”
