“And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon, and this man was just and devout, waiting for the Consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.” – Luke 2:25-26
When Simeon walked into the temple that day, he wasn’t following a feeling—he was being led by the Holy Spirit (Luke 2:26–27). Before he ever held the infant Christ, the Spirit had already been revealing truth to him, guiding him, and preparing his heart. This moment reminds us that the Holy Spirit is not an impersonal force or a mystical energy. He is a Person—eternal, intelligent, emotional, and active. From the opening verses of Genesis, where “the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters” (Genesis 1:2, NKJV), to the pages of the New Testament, the Spirit has always been present and working. He reveals truth (1 Corinthians 2:10), He teaches (John 14:26), He guides (Acts 16:6–7), and He can even be grieved (Ephesians 4:30). Only a Person can do these things. Only God Himself can do these things.
The Holy Spirit is also fully God—one with the Father and the Son. Though the word Trinity doesn’t appear in Scripture, the reality of it fills the pages of the Bible. At Jesus’ baptism, the Son stands in the water, the Spirit descends like a dove, and the Father speaks from heaven (Matthew 3:16–17). Jesus promised His disciples that the Spirit who was with them would soon be in them (John 14:17). And after His resurrection, He promised power—dunamis, explosive spiritual strength—when the Spirit would come upon them (Acts 1:8). This same Spirit who moved upon Simeon now indwells every believer, shaping us into the image of Christ and empowering us to live out God’s calling. He convicts, comforts, strengthens, and transforms. He is not distant. He is not silent. He is God with us and God in us.
And the Spirit still works today. He is the One who opened your eyes to the gospel, who drew you to Christ, and who now lives within you to guide your steps. He still gives wisdom when you ask, conviction when you wander, and courage when you fear. He still fills, empowers, and overflows through believers who seek Him. Just as Simeon was led by the Spirit to Jesus, the Spirit leads us to truth, to obedience, and to deeper fellowship with Christ.
Are you listening for the Spirit’s leading? Are you allowing Him to shape your thoughts, your decisions, and your desires? The same Holy Spirit who guided Simeon is guiding you today. Invite Him to fill you, teach you, and empower you. Ask Him to make you more like Jesus. And trust that the God who began a good work in you will complete it—by His Spirit, for His glory.
“The Holy Spirit is not enthusiasm. He is not courage nor energy nor the personification of all good qualities. He is a Person, the Spirit of the living God, and He must be honored as such.” – A. W. Tozer
