IF God Is For You

“What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?” – Romans 8:31

After laying out the golden chain of salvation—foreknown, predestined, called, justified, and glorified—Paul asks a thunderous question: “What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31). It’s not just a rhetorical question; it’s a declaration of divine security. Paul anticipates objections: Can someone take our salvation away? Can circumstances undo God’s plan? He answers by pointing to the source—God Himself. If He is the One who began our salvation, who could possibly be powerful enough to interrupt it? Whether it’s false teachers, religious systems, corrupt influences, or even our own failures, none can override the eternal purpose of God. To suggest otherwise is to claim someone is stronger than the Almighty.

History gives us bold examples of this truth. Martin Luther stood before the emperor and the church, refusing to recant his convictions. His conscience was captive to the Word of God, and he stood firm because he knew God was for him. “Here I stand. I can do no other.” That same confidence belongs to every believer. Psalm 27 echoes this assurance: “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?” No enemy, no institution, no failure can sever us from Christ. God didn’t save us to leave us halfway. He saved us while we were still sinners (Romans 5:8), and He saved us to the end. Isaiah 54:17 declares, “No weapon formed against you shall prosper… This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord.” That’s not wishful thinking—it’s covenant truth.

Rest in the unshakable truth that God is for you. Don’t let fear, failure, or opposition convince you otherwise. Salvation isn’t a fragile thread—it’s a divine chain forged by God Himself. And if He set you on the path to glory, He will see you through. Let that confidence fuel your obedience, your worship, and your witness. You are not walking alone. You are held by the One who cannot fail. So stand firm, like Luther, and say with boldness: “God is for me—who can be against me?”

“The questions here are really a challenge to God. It’s a challenge to the plan and purpose and power of God. Since God planned your salvation. Since God purposed in that plan to bring you into the image of Christ, and since God has the power to bring the plan to completion, any person who can interrupt the plan must be more powerful than God.” – John MacArthur
