Walking In Freedom

“…that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.” – Romans 8:4

This isn’t a condition we must meet—it’s a description of who we are now. Before salvation, the flesh ruled every part of our lives. But now, the Spirit flows through us. Not perfectly, but powerfully. This is why we speak of conversion—because we were going one way, and now we’re going another. We’re not trying to earn our way into God’s favor; we’re walking in the favor we’ve already received. The Spirit leads us, and that leading is the mark of every true child of God (Romans 8:14).

Jesus didn’t just free us from the law’s demands—He fulfilled them for us. He lived the perfect life we couldn’t, died the death we deserved, and rose again to give us His righteousness. Now, by the Holy Spirit, we are empowered to live out God’s Word—not to be saved, but because we are saved. Psalm 18:36 says, “You enlarged my path under me, so my feet did not slip.” We’re not walking a tightrope—we’re walking a Spirit-widened path of grace. And as we read Scripture, we don’t just see rules—we see restoration. We see how God shaped Abraham’s faith, how He gave Noah courage, how He transformed Paul’s life. And we cry out, “Lord, make me like that!” Just like the disciples did when Jesus called them to forgive again and again—they said, “Increase our faith!” Because they knew only He could enable them to live it out.

That’s the purpose of our liberty: divine enablement. God never asks us to do something without first giving us the power to do it. The Christian life isn’t one long struggle to be good—it’s a growing relationship with Jesus, who gives us strength to walk with Him. Satan offers his best upfront and hides the pain that follows. But Jesus gives us His best now and even better later. He never stops pursuing us. Even when we stop pursuing Him, He keeps drawing us back. That’s what it means to walk in the Spirit. It’s not a condition—it’s our new nature. Let us live out your liberty. Let the Word transfer from page to path. Ask God to write it on your heart. And walk freely, humbly, and joyfully in the Spirit who lives within you.

“The Christian is a man who has been delivered from the condemnation of the law, but he is also a man in whom the righteousness of the law is being fulfilled. Not by himself, but by the Spirit.” – Martyn Lloyd-Jones
