“Do we then make void the law through faith? Certainly not! On the contrary, we establish the law.” – Romans 3:31
You’ve probably heard the phrase, “All roads lead to God.” It’s a popular idea in our culture—one that paints religion as a mountain with many paths, all leading to the same summit. But Scripture tells a different story. 2 John 9–11 warns us not to receive or endorse anyone who teaches a gospel apart from Christ. “He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son.” Jesus Himself said, “No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6). This isn’t narrow-minded—it’s truth. Christianity is exclusive in its claim, but inclusive in its invitation. John 3:16 declares that “whoever believes” can have eternal life. Salvation is not earned by climbing a mountain—it’s received by trusting the One who descended from heaven to rescue us.
In Romans 3:31, Paul anticipates a question: “If we’re saved by faith, does the law even matter?” His answer is emphatic—“Certainly not!” The law was never meant to save us; it was meant to show us our need for a Savior. Galatians 3:24 says, “Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith.” The Mosaic law revealed our inability to be righteous on our own. It pointed forward to the only One who could fulfill it perfectly—Jesus Christ, fully God and fully man. He bore the curse of the law so we wouldn’t have to. As the hymn says, “On Christ Almighty vengeance fell… and thus became a hiding place.” The law doesn’t lose its value—it finds its fulfillment in Him.
So here’s the question: Is Jesus your hiding place today? When you stumble, do you run to Him or try to fix yourself first? The law shows us how far we fall short, but grace shows us where to run. Psalm 139:23–24 invites us to pray, “Search me, O God… and lead me in the way everlasting.” God’s Word is not just a sword—it’s a light, a guide, and a refuge. In Christ, we are no longer under condemnation. He is our shelter, our Savior, and our security. Let’s stop trying to make salvation more palatable to man and start proclaiming it as the glorious gift it is. God is the Just and the Justifier. He made one way, through one Savior, for all who believe. Let that truth humble your heart and lift your eyes to Him.
“The greatest lie in the world, and the lie common to all false religions and cults, is that, by certain works of their own doing, men are able to make themselves acceptable to God. The greatest error in that belief is its sheer impossibility. But the greatest evil of that belief is that it robs God of His glory.” – John MacArthur
