No Partiality with God

“For there is no partiality with God.” – Romans 2:11

Paul makes clear that God does not judge based on appearances, background, or sentimental appeals. His justice isn’t influenced by the charm of a smile or the reputation of a name. The Greek word used—prosopolemptes—means “to receive a face.” But with God, faces don’t sway verdicts. Think of the familiar symbol of Lady Justice, blindfolded, scales balanced. She doesn’t consider the defendant’s looks—only the truth of the case. In the same way, God’s righteous judgment is impartial. In human courts, we often see defendants dressed plainly or sympathetically to win over the jury. And as parents, we know how easily the pleading eyes of a child can make us soften the rules. We are partial—but God is not.

There’s a story of Brutus the Elder, a Roman ruler whose sons were caught plotting treason. Despite their tears and the public’s pleas, he carried out their sentence—choosing justice over personal affection. It’s a picture of the balance God holds perfectly. We may think, “Surely God wouldn’t judge me, I’m a good person,” or “I come from a godly family, that must count.” But Romans 2:2 reminds us: His judgment is always according to truth. Not our standard. Not our excuses. Truth. Jesus echoes this in Matthew 7:21, saying that even those who say, “Lord, Lord,” may not enter the kingdom unless their hearts match their words. It’s not about face—it’s about faith.

Ask yourself, what standard am I trusting in—my heritage, my morality, my good intentions? None of these are strong enough to stand in God’s courtroom. Only the righteousness of Christ can cover us. Today, let God examine your heart, not just your habits. Don’t appeal to Him based on your image. Trust in His mercy, and walk humbly in His truth. The Judge sees clearly, and graciously offers salvation to all who come—no favorites, no exceptions.

“God’s judgment is absolutely impartial. He has no favorites and accepts no bribes. His justice is perfect, and His verdicts are based on truth, not appearances.” – John MacArthur
