“Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love.”
– Revelation 2:4
The church at Ephesus was commended for many virtuous qualities. Jesus applauded their labor, patience, and perseverance. During very trying times, they stood against oppression, unwavering in their faith and firm belief. They were structured and organized and full of activity. By all measurements, this church seemed to be “fighting the good fight” and winning the battles. They seemed to have everything in order. And yet, despite all of their “successes,” Jesus brings an accusation.
After praising them for abiding by His Word in deed, Jesus rebukes them for the spirit in which they did so. The believers that made up the church of Ephesus were so busy working for Christ that they were guilty of neglecting time with Him. They worked hard to separate themselves from the world yet neglected adoration toward the Lord. In their attempt to remain pure, they lost their passion. Their labor replaced their love.
What we do for the Lord while we await His return is important. However, the reason why we labor for Him is much more valuable. Our love for Christ should drive our motivation. It is that “honeymoon love” one experiences as a new believer that must be maintained. The kind of love that is fervent, excited, and displayed openly so all can see.
It has been said that “when a husband and wife begin to take each other for granted, and life becomes routine, then the marriage is in danger.” Does this describe your relationship with Christ? Has your walk with the Lord become routine? If so, you can be sure He is not the one who has drifted. Repent and return. Do the works you did at the start. Spend time sitting at His feet in adoration.
“Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works…”
– Revelation 2:5
