God’s Favor

“Now God had brought Daniel into the favor and goodwill of the chief of the eunuchs.”

– Daniel 1:9

When Nebuchadnezzar took Daniel and his friends into captivity at a young age, they were forced to study the culture and religion of a pagan society. Their names were changed from those that celebrated God to those that glorified the false gods of Babylon. Learning new languages, cultures, and religions did not threaten their spiritual lives. However, when it came to practicing customs that opposed God’s law, they drew a line.

The Bible tells us, “When a man’s ways please the Lord, he makes even his enemies to be at peace with him” (Proverbs 16:7). This was indeed the case with Daniel and his friends. God had put it into the heart of Ashpenaz to show kindness to these young men. It was because Daniel purposed in his heart not to defile himself. He would be obedient to God alone.

God gave the four Jewish men favor in the eyes of those overseeing them. When the young men were told to defile themselves against God’s law, they appealed to their captors with a challenge. It was an opportunity to glorify the Lord. The four young men did not intimidate or threaten anyone. Nor did they coordinate a protest or riot in the streets. They excelled in their training and studies and were courteous. For them, it was possible to live peaceably in such a way that would praise the Lord. This is a great model for all believers; when we glorify God’s name, He will show us favor.

“If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men.”
