“And when He was in the house He asked them…But they kept silent.”
– Mark 9:33, 34
While Jesus spoke about His brutal death that would soon take place, the disciples were arguing about which one of them was more favored and blessed. They argued over who would have the most prominent position next to Jesus. When Jesus asked His disciples what they were talking about, He already knew. The Messiah was bringing it to light and exposing it to them. There is nothing hidden from the Lord. Jesus said, “…whatever you have spoken in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have spoken in the ear in inner rooms will be proclaimed on the housetops” (Luke 12:3). A simple truth we must always take to heart.
It must have been an embarrassing moment for the twelve. When they were asked what they were arguing about, they did not want to answer because they knew their conversation was foolish. They knew their hearts were wrong. Jesus then gives them a lesson in humility. Thankfully, the lives of the Lord’s companions provide lessons for us today.
There will be times in our lives when our understanding of events is wrong. We may even enter into foolish arguments. More times than not, it would be better if we held our tongues. It may keep us from being involved in conversations or practices that would embarrass us if brought to light. May our discussions be about Him and what He did on the Cross, so those are the words “proclaimed on the housetops!”
“O blessed Lord Jesus, Your teachings probe and expose this carnal heart of mine. Break me of self and let Your life be lived through me.”
