“But as for you, speak the things which are proper for sound doctrine…”
– Titus 2:1
The Apostle Paul addressed the qualifications of leaders. He now introduces the qualities of a sound church. False teachers moved in on the Cretan fellowships. The consequences of their unsound doctrine were demonstrated in the people’s lifestyle. There was an ungodly ripple effect.
The words “but as for you” in this Scripture are weighty. It is as if Paul is encouraging Titus by saying, “okay, we know how they are, but you are different. You have been anointed and developed in truth. Even though they are false witnesses, you remain true to the call no matter what!” Titus and the men he would appoint were to correct the existing narrative sharply. The churches on the island of Crete were in desperate need of sound teaching. Correct doctrine produces holy living.
The Bible says, “He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, ‘Be holy, for I am holy” (1 Peter 1:15-16). Living a holy life will never save, yet it is proof that we love the Lord Jesus Christ sincerely. It is “sound evidence that we are true children of God.” It is the most feasible way to love others as we are loved by the Lord (John 15:12). As God’s Word changes us, we live as He commands. As a result, those starving for love are shown the love of Christ and are drawn to Him. What an incredible beacon of hope in such a dark world! May our lives shine today in our conduct to glorify God (Matthew 5:16).
“True faith will always show itself by its fruits – it will sanctify, it will work by love, it will overcome the world, it will purify the heart. It carries a weight and influence with it which nothing else can give. It makes religion beautiful, and draws men to consider it, like a lighthouse seen afar off.”
