“If we have sown spiritual things for you, is it a great thing if we reap your material things?” – 1 Corinthians 9:11
Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 9 remind the church that spiritual labor has real value. As he continues teaching on the responsibilities and freedoms of Christian ministry, he addresses a topic many believers instinctively tense up about—material support for those who sow spiritual truth. Paul isn’t manipulating or pleading for himself; he is simply teaching the principle God established. Those who faithfully labor in the Word, prayer, and shepherding are worthy of material support from the people they serve. It is part of God’s design for the health and continuation of gospel ministry.
Paul explains that just as workers in any field receive wages for their labor, those who invest spiritually in the church should not be left unsupported. He had received help from other churches, though he chose not to take it from Corinth for strategic reasons. His point is clear: if a teacher is faithfully sowing spiritual truth, it is not unreasonable for the church to help meet their material needs. Warren Wiersbe wisely notes that many believers have confused priorities, and when Matthew 6:33 is neglected, the work of Christ suffers. When God’s people put His kingdom first, there is always enough for ministry, missions, and the advancement of the gospel.
Paul’s teaching exposes a sobering reality: people often give more generously to falsehood than to truth. Throughout history, temples of error have been built with zeal, while many gospel-preaching churches struggle to stay afloat. The issue is not God’s provision—it is the priorities of His people. When believers withhold support, ministries weaken. When believers give faithfully, ministries flourish. God designed His church to thrive through the generosity of His people.
What about you today? Are you helping advance the work of Christ, or unintentionally hindering it? Giving time alone is not a substitute for obedience in this area. Scripture calls every believer to seek the Lord and ask whether their priorities align with His. Are you practicing Matthew 6:33? Are you supporting the spiritual laborers who sow into your life? Examine your heart and your habits. The work of Christ moves forward when God’s people give faithfully, joyfully, and obediently.
“God’s servants are not beggars; they are His ambassadors. And ambassadors must be supported by the kingdom they represent.” — C.H. Spurgeon
