The Gift You Can’t Earn

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” – Romans 6:23

Paul reminds us in Romans 6 that grace is not a license to sin but the power to live a new life. Just as Jesus died and rose again, believers are called to die to their old ways and walk in newness of life. Grace covers our failures, but it does not excuse a lifestyle of rebellion. Paul urges us to stop using our bodies—our minds, eyes, mouths, and actions—for unrighteousness. We belong to a new Master now, and our lives should reflect that transformation.

Then Paul makes a striking contrast: ā€œThe wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life.ā€ Sin pays out a wage—something earned, something worked for. That wage is spiritual death and eternal separation from God. But eternal life is not earned; it is given. It is a gift purchased by Christ and offered freely to all. It’s ironic, isn’t it? Most people dislike labor, yet countless souls ā€œworkā€ their way toward hell through a life lived apart from God, while refusing the free gift that leads to heaven. Salvation costs us nothing, yet many reject it because they want to live independently, unaware that their independence leads to eternal ruin.

God’s gift is available to everyone, but it must be received. After receiving it, we are called to live obediently—not perfectly, but faithfully. We will stumble, but if we find ourselves living in a pattern of sin without conviction or change, it’s time to examine our hearts. If God is not first, if obedience is not present, then something is off. The wages of sin are real, and so is the gift of eternal life. One is earned; the other is offered.

What about you today? Are you living as though sin pays better than grace? Are you relying on your own way while ignoring the free gift God offers? Salvation is free, but it must be received—and once received, it calls us into a life of obedience. Examine your walk. If God is not first, make the change today. The wages of sin are death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

“The Lord does not give me rules, but He makes His standard very clear. If my relationship to Him is that of love, I will do what He says without hesitation. If I hesitate, it is because I love someone I have placed in competition with Him, namely, myself. Jesus Christ will not force me to obey Him, but I must. And as soon as I obey Him, I fulfill my spiritual destiny.ā€ – Oswald Chambers
