Which Voice Will You Follow?

“She cries out from the highest places of the city,
“’Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!’” – Proverbs 9:3-4

Proverbs 9 paints a vivid picture of two voices calling out from the highest places of the city. One is Wisdom, offering life, clarity, and the fear of the Lord. The other is Folly, offering pleasure, ease, and a path that leads to destruction. Both call out to the “simple,” to those who are searching, wandering, or spiritually unaware. Wisdom invites us to turn in and live; Folly invites us to turn in and die. It really is that simple. This chapter becomes a miniature gospel—two invitations, two paths, two destinies. One leads to everlasting peace, the other to everlasting separation from God.

Verse ten reminds us that true wisdom begins with reverence for God. To acknowledge Him, to fear Him, to submit to Him—this is understanding. But the world shouts too. Its voice is loud, enticing, and often more appealing to the flesh. The pleasures it offers are immediate, temporary, and deceptive. They satisfy for a moment but destroy for eternity. Proverbs 9 warns that those who follow the world’s voice do not realize that “the dead are there,” and that its guests are already in the depths of hell. There is no middle ground. You either turn toward Christ or toward destruction. Neutrality is impossible.

God, however, is not silent. He is calling out—loudly, lovingly, persistently—for us to turn in to Him. He is patient, not wanting anyone to perish but all to come to repentance. But His patience is not permission to delay. Wisdom calls now. Life calls now. Christ calls now. The question is not whether God is speaking; the question is whether we are listening.

What about you today? Which voice has been louder in your life—the world’s or God’s? Are you drawn toward temporary pleasures that leave you empty, or toward the wisdom that leads to eternal life? If you knew today was your last day, which invitation would you follow? God is calling you home. Turn in to Him. Choose wisdom. Choose life.

“Being a Christian is less about cautiously avoiding sin than about courageously and actively choosing God’s will.” — Dietrich Bonhoeffer
