“And Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it; and Hezekiah went up to the house of the Lord, and spread it before the Lord. Then Hezekiah prayed to the Lord…” – Isaiah 37:14-15
When Hezekiah received the threatening letter from Assyria, he didn’t argue, panic, or strategize. He took the message straight to the house of God, laid it out before Him, and prayed. This moment in Isaiah 37 reveals a king who had learned from past mistakes. Earlier, Hezekiah tried to solve the Assyrian threat with money and human effort, but it failed. Now, facing renewed danger, he chose the better path—humility, surrender, and prayer. He brought the problem to God instead of trying to fix it himself.
The Assyrian commander mocked God, boasted of past victories, and tried to intimidate Judah. Hezekiah could have responded with fear or anger, but he didn’t. He told his leaders not to answer the enemy at all. Instead, he carried the letter into the presence of the Lord and spread it out before Him. Hezekiah had grown. Experience had taught him that human strength cannot defeat spiritual threats. He knew that God alone could save, and he trusted God to act for His name’s sake. And God did—He delivered Judah and proved Himself faithful.
This story reminds us that God hears the prayers of those who humble themselves. Hezekiah didn’t pretend to be strong. He didn’t hide the problem. He didn’t negotiate with the enemy. He laid the issue before God and waited for His answer. God responded with power, protection, and peace. He kept His promises, just as He always does.
What about you today? When the enemy threatens, do you rush to fight in your own strength? Do you try to fix your addictions, fears, or temptations by sheer willpower? Do you chase comfort in things that leave you empty? Hezekiah learned to stop running toward the problem and start running toward God. Whatever letter the enemy has handed you—whatever fear, sin, or burden you’re carrying—spread it out before the Lord. He will answer, because He is the answer, and your soul will finally find rest.
